Hey y’all, there’s a special on RootsHighway.com on Hollywood Country. If you’ve got a minute, go check it out. There’s interviews with a lot of my favorite folks out here. Also, I’m interviewed and you can just click the image below to go directly to that. Thanks to Marc over there for giving us a voice. It’s a pretty good look at things out here. Although you can never really cover enough of this scene to get it all, he does a great job.

So, some of you know, some don’t so here’s the update: I’m the music news guy on Indie 103.1’s “Watusi Rodeo”, on Sundays. You can hear the show live on the web at http://indie1031.fm Sundays @ 11am. Or down load my segment here from the link below… I’ll try to get it on here sorta regularly, it might even become a “podcast” for those of you hip to that… enjoy.

The Rodeo Minute

Send some love to Waylon Payne… his Mother, Ms. Sammi Smith, passed last weekend. Here’s a little story about her. . I can’t imagine what it is like to lose a parent… Say a prayer, if you do that sort of thing…

There’s a cover story in the LA Weekly about the “Hollywood Country” scene.. go read it.. it’s interesting. It seems skewed to me and maybe a little misinformed. If you think Mr. Whiteside got anything wrong.. or if you see the scene in a different light, maybe you’d like to drop a line to the editor.. be nice…

LA Weekly “Hollywood Country”

Send a Letter to the Editor of the Weekly.

I feel like I’ve done more than my share to help the local scene and that anyone who bothered to be around me for a few minutes would figure that out. No matter how wild and rude I get onstage at Sweethearts, my heart is still with the artists in this town. They know the deal. If someone doesn’t get the joke, that’s their problem.

Also Johnny Whiteside’s email is…jwhiteside@laweekly.com Let him know what you want, but let’s not harrass him. He’s got a right to say what he wants, even if he never bothered to ask me about any of his accusations. Remember, a letter to the editor says more than a rant to Johnny, but if you wanna send him your letter too.. feel free.. it’s America, right?

I love you all and I love all the artists in the article. If anyone in this town could get ahead.. it’d make me pretty damn happy. I’m glad to see someone get press, even if I take some lumps in the process. If Johnny Whiteside wants to talk to me, cool.. I’m around. If he doesn’t… like Hank said, “He can kiss my ass.”

All I can say is.. thanks. To the bands, to the radio folks and to the 867 (!!) people who crossed through the King King last Friday night. We turned over the crowd almost three times and the line outside pretty much never went away. Boys and Girls Town of LA thanks you and I thank you. Onward into the new year… how long can the labels ignore this scene?

Alright, so if you aren’t in LA and wanna catch a little of Bryson Jones, you can Pay-Per-View me off of In Demand. Check their website Here. It’s running all this week.

It’s the Gram Parsons Tribute show from Universal this last summer. There’s even a group shot that includes me on the webpage (I’m next to Lucinda.) It’s like $20.00 so you may wanna wait for the DVD to come out, but it’s a great show and there’s lots of rockstars.. oh yeah, and me.. 😉

What do you say? The Indie 103.1 show was amazing.. such a great night.. 12 amazing bands, no attitudes, nothing but great music. Doc Holiday outdid himself as a host and put together a really solid night. Thanks to JT, Molly’s, Shilah (Sin City) and all of you who came out, paid your $1.03 and made the night rock. My personal highlight was seeing all the old-school folks singing along with our cover of “People Who Died”. You made my week…okay, maybe even my month. See you all at the Roxy on the 18th when we open for the Supersuckers (country set).

Gigs!! This week.. Wednesday the 4th is Sweethearts @ Molly Malone’s. The Tennessee Boltsmokers are the guests!! Come out!

Also, the 14th of August!! Saturday night at Club Lingere, The Snakehandlers are playin’ with Austin Hanks and West Coast Grand. More info and a cool flyer to follow.. stay tuned and please come!

Oh yeah, almost forgot… there’s a new rant.

Ok.. It’s been weird lately.. I’m playin a show this weekend at Santa Barbara Bowl, (well 2, actually) and at Universal Amphitheater.. yeah, those are kinda big joints..

There’s the site.. Keith Richards is playin’, Dwight Yoakam, Lucinda Williams, tons of folks.. It’s a benefit for Musicians Assistance Program

I’m honored to be able to be of service and to honor a great musician who never had the benefit of any “assistance”. I would honestly rather have him playin’ bluegrass down there in San Diego with Chris Hillman than looking larger than life in an old picture. In short, I wish he’d lived.. even if he would’ve gotten old and uncool.. I’ll bet I’d still listen to those old records. He was a man, a musician, a father and sadly, an addict.. I’ll honor him by doing my best to not let this life get to me… how about you all try to do the same.
